ModMed Names Co-Founder Dan Cane Chief AI Officer as Company Accelerates Its Next Chapter as an AI Leader in Healthcare

ModMed, a leading provider of AI-powered software and services to specialty medical practices backed by Clearlake Capital Group, L.P. (“Clearlake”), today announced a new leadership structure designed to accelerate its next chapter as an AI leader in healthcare. Co-founder Dan Cane will become ModMed’s first Chief AI Officer, with responsibility for driving the company’s AI strategy across its products and operations. Fellow co-founder Dr. Michael Sherling will continue to lead the company’s clinical and strategic initiatives as Chief Medical and Strategy Officer, including the company’s expanding portfolio of clinical AI solutions.

As part of the new structure, Joe Harpaz has been named Chief Executive Officer, transitioning from the Co-CEO role that he has held with Cane for the past three years. Celine Kaiser has been named to Chief Operating Officer, bringing product management, customer success, and the company’s revenue cycle management (“RCM”) business under her leadership.

“AI is changing what medical practices should expect from their technology partner, and ModMed is striving to lead that change,” said Harpaz. “Dan and Michael built ModMed by bringing technology and medicine together to solve problems that others had accepted as inevitable. The next chapter of healthcare IT calls for that same ambition. We are putting our founders directly at the forefront of our most important AI initiatives and organizing the company to turn that innovation into meaningful results for our customers.”

Founder-led innovation across the company

The new structure establishes dedicated leadership across three major areas of AI innovation: revenue cycle management, clinical care, and patient engagement.

Just as Cane and Sherling reimagined the EHR when they founded ModMed, they are now rebuilding the clinical and financial workflows of a medical practice through an AI-native lens. Their focus is on how patients are engaged, care is delivered, and practices are paid, with AI at the foundation, which extends the vision on which ModMed was founded into a new era of healthcare.

As Chief AI Officer, Cane will lead ModMed’s AI strategy across its products and internal operations, with direct executive responsibility for the ModMed RCM AI Platform. He will work closely with ModMed’s technology and product organizations to advance AI that aims to help practices address denials, accelerate claim resolution, and reduce the administrative work associated with getting paid.

Cane will also continue leading ModMed’s internal AI transformation, helping teams rethink how work gets done and apply those lessons throughout the company.

“We founded ModMed because we believed technology could fundamentally improve the way physicians practice medicine and run their practices,” said Cane. “AI expands what we can deliver on that promise. I’m excited to continue focusing my time on building that future with our teams—from helping practices navigate the complexity of reimbursement to reimagining how we develop and deliver technology.”

Sherling will continue to lead ModMed’s clinical AI initiatives, building on the company’s specialty-specific clinical foundation and its work in AI-powered clinical documentation. Under Sherling’s leadership, ModMed is developing a broad portfolio of new clinical AI offerings designed around providers and the care they deliver, including ModMed Scribe, which has supported nearly 3 million patient visits in the 11 months since its release. Each of these offerings will bring the company’s clinical depth and specialty expertise to new capabilities that support providers throughout their workflows, reduce administrative burden and create more time for patient care.

“We believe the value of clinical AI comes down to what it enables a physician to do for a patient,” said Sherling. “Our opportunity is to reduce the work that competes for a physician’s attention and make technology a more useful partner in delivering care. We are bringing the clinical depth and specialty expertise that have always defined ModMed to this next generation of AI.”

Both co-founders will remain members of ModMed’s Board of Directors.

ModMed is also bringing founder-led innovation to Patient Engagement AI. Luke Kervin, co-founder of Bonsai Health, which ModMed acquired in April 2026, brings years of experience in patient engagement and will lead product development within the Chief Technology Officer’s organization. He will work alongside fellow Bonsai co-founder Travis Schneider, now General Manager of Patient Engagement at ModMed.

Together, Kervin and Schneider will lead the planned 2027 rollout of a new agentic AI platform designed to deliver an AI-native front office experience that simplifies patient interactions with practices and reduces the administrative burden on front office staff.

An organization built to deliver the AI-Powered Practice

Kaiser joined ModMed in 2019 and has held numerous leadership roles since, most recently as Chief Customer Officer. She also built and successfully scaled ModMed’s Payments business and led the launch of ModMed’s OBGYN specialty expansion. As the new Chief Operating Officer, Kaiser will continue to focus on delivering exceptional customer experience, ensuring practices receive the attention and support they need, including guidance as they adopt new AI offerings. She will also lead efforts to streamline company operations, bringing the teams that shape ModMed’s products, support its customers, and help practices get paid into closer alignment. The aim is a more coordinated experience for practices, with those teams working from shared priorities as ModMed grows.

“ModMed combines deep specialty clinical expertise with AI, and the results continue to reflect that combination, with ModMed Scribe as the fastest growing product in company history in its first year,” said Paul Huber, Partner and Managing Director at Clearlake. “We have strong conviction in Joe’s proven leadership to scale the organization as CEO, and in Dan and Michael as they lead AI initiatives across clinical, operational, and financial workflows. ModMed’s growth momentum is stronger than ever, and we are proud to back this team as they work to build the premier AI company for healthcare.”

Harpaz added, “Our ambition is to make the AI-Powered Practice a reality across every part of our customers’ practices. This structure gives us focused leadership, clear accountability, and the ability to advance several major initiatives at once. It positions us to move faster and help our customers do the same.”
