“Wild Pigs and Prescribed Fire in the Red Hills” will take place Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. ET and feature Kim Sash, Biological Monitoring Director at Tall Timbers Research Station and Land Conservancy.
The Red Hills region of northern Florida and southern Georgia is one of the country’s most active landscapes for prescribed fire. It is also home to established wild pig populations, creating an opportunity for researchers to examine how the two interact over time and what that relationship means for land and wildlife management.
Sash and the Tall Timbers team have spent five years studying wild pigs across this frequently burned landscape. During the webinar, she will discuss what researchers have observed in the field, how wild pigs respond to changing habitat conditions, and what the data may tell land managers about managing pigs alongside other conservation priorities.
“Prescribed fire is one of the most important tools we have for managing habitat in the Southeast, but wild pigs add another variable to an already complex system,” said Dr. Aaron Sumrall, Director of Outreach, Education & Research at Pig Brig. “What makes Kim’s work so valuable is that it gives us years of field data to work from. The hour-long webinar will draw on Sash’s work directing the Biological Monitoring Program at Tall Timbers, where she oversees long-term wildlife monitoring and research. The discussion will explore how prescribed fire can influence the landscape wild pigs occupy, how the presence of pigs can affect other wildlife, and what researchers have learned about managing pig populations in these environments.
The webinar is intended for landowners, land managers, wildlife professionals, conservation organizations and others interested in wild pig management, prescribed fire and habitat conservation. Attendance is free, but registration is required.
