Partnership will assess offshore computing for operators and GORI platform research and pilot demonstrations
HOUSTON, TX, UNITED STATES, October 27, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Offshore Data Center, LLC (ODC) today announced that it has selected the Gulf Offshore Research Institute (GORI) as a research partner to evaluate edge-computing data centers on or near late-life offshore platforms in the Gulf of America. The partners will assess whether computing located close to offshore operations can support ocean monitoring, blue-economy projects, and other applications.
The collaboration will connect ODC’s offshore computing concept with GORI’s five-year effort to retrofit and operationalize five offshore platforms. GORI’s research and pilot work includes offshore energy, critical-mineral recovery, aquaculture, fisheries, and ocean monitoring. The partners will examine whether edge computing could support these activities by processing sensor and operational data close to where it is collected, and assess requirements for power, connectivity, cooling, structural integrity, permitting, and project economics.
Offshore data centers were outside GORI’s original scope under the National Academies’ Gulf Futures Challenge award, so the companies will be working collaboratively seeking additional funding to incorporate data-center demonstration work.
GORI Executive Director Kent Satterlee has described the integrated approach this way: “By integrating renewable energy, aquaculture, mineral recovery, and ocean monitoring, we strengthen marine habitats, support thriving ecosystems, boost coastal economies, and advance sustainable energy production.”
“Large AI training centers draw attention, but offshore operations may benefit from smaller edge-computing systems that process data close to where it is generated,” said Art J. Schroeder, Jr., Founder and CEO of ODC. “Working with GORI will let us assess how this concept fits offshore assets, operator needs, and the technical and economic requirements for deployment.”
ODC’s concepts draw on relationships with companies working in fiber connectivity, satellite uplink, power generation, GPU systems, and liquid cooling. ODC is also exploring larger offshore computing facilities using semi-submersible designs developed with its partner Horton do Brasil Tecnologia Offshore.
